Game Modding

Always wished you could change things in your favorite game? Add your own brilliant idea for a map, or add your own character? In thiss class, students can edit the world of Unreal Tournament 3*,the successor to one of the most popular and technically sophisticated games in the world, Unreal Tournament 2004. Students will learn to create their own maps, vehicles, characters, and units, and place them into the world of Unreal Tournament. Students will use the famed modding tools from Unreal, and can even add their own storyline, plot, and sounds to the game, creating mods much like the famed Rocketeer and Red Orchestra.

Modding has become the wave of the future with gaming, with a greater focus being placed upon individuals contributing to their favorite game, and customizing the game to suit their vision. Game Modding also allows students to learn the game design process without the difficulty of creating their own game engine; allowing them to learn the essential skills of storymaking, modeling, level design. and presentation. These skills prepare the students for all aspects of game development, allowing them to learn the process from beginning to end, gaining enough skill to eventually oversee a game development project of their own independently from the big studios. This is increasingly important in a world where game studios are increasingly demanding more and paying less to game developers, which requires prospective game developers to learn the process from conception to marketing in order to make it on their own.

*The use of this game is dependent upon the actual release of Unreal Tournament 3. If the game is delayed, or not available at the time of the camp, we will shift back to Unreal Tournament 2004. Younger students may choose a game which has a lower ESRB rating. We will unveil our alternate game for younger students shortly.

Who should take this course?

This camp is great for someone who loves video games and wants to modify their favorite games. It is great mid-level program that takes kids further down the world of game creation. Students should be familiar with the basics of computers, such as opening and copying files, and so on. Younger students are recommended to have taken 2D Game Design before progressing to this course.

How We Teach

Our method of teaching game modding allows campers to go behind the scenes of their favorite games. They will see how their favorite levels were built, and will then build one of their own using the critically acclaimed Unreal map editor. The students can then create their own characters, vehicles, and enemies using famed modelling tools such as 3DS Max, and then putting them in their mod. Students will also add a backstory to their game in their mod, and can add sounds such as voiceovers, commands, and in-game effects in order to complete their mod.

At the end of the class, the students will share their games with family and friends in an event where they can show off their mods on a projector in front of the class. Students will also take a copy of Unreal Tounament and their mod home on a CD, and will receive instructions on how to download the mod tools of the game so they can continue working on their mod when they get home.
